5 Minor Dental Issues That Can Quickly Become Serious Without Treatment
Your mouth has an incredible healing ability. For instance, your saliva can neutralize acids, kill bacteria and heal wounds quickly. Most mild dental issues then will come and go without any further problems. But sometimes, even a minor issue could be an indication that dental treatment is necessary. The following minor dental issues can worsen if you don't do anything to treat them early on.
1. Mild tooth sensitivity
When one or more of your teeth becomes sensitive to temperatures and certain foods like chocolate, you need to pay attention. The onset of sensitivity indicates that your tooth has weakened in some way. Sensitivity often results when the enamel layer is compromised in some way, for instance, by tooth decay or wear and tear.
If a tooth becomes sensitive, have your dentist examine the tooth to determine the cause. If you wait too long, the tooth could succumb to tooth decay. In that case, you might need a root canal and dental crown.
2. Mild tooth pain
Pain is another indicator that a tooth is weakening. If your tooth hurts when you bite down, then a hidden crack or fracture could be to blame. If your tooth throbs incessantly, then an infection could be to blame. Only your dentist can say for sure what the problem is. But don't wait too long because a compromised tooth is open to infection.
3. A small tooth chip
A small chip might not look too troubling, but that chip can quickly become a large chunk if you chew a hard item of food at just the right angle. And if you grind your teeth at night, then you could wake up with a much bigger chip on your hands. The exposed innards of your tooth are fragile and prone to infection. This seemingly minor issue could turn serious overnight.
4. A small buildup of tartar
Even a small amount of tartar increases your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. The rough and chalky surface of tartar is ideal for plaque formation. And the longer plaque stays on, the more likely that plaque will harden and add to the layer of existing tartar. If you notice tartar on your teeth, consider visiting a dentist for a dental cleaning.
5. A mild gum infection
Gum infections that cause swollen, red and bleeding gums start when bacteria begin to irritate gum tissue. While you can overcome a mild gum infection with good oral hygiene, if a mild infection persists or continues to return, consider having your dentist check for the cause. Gum infections can cause gum recession. And gum recession can leave the roots of your teeth exposed to oral bacteria.
These mild oral conditions might not look too serious at first glance, but they are a warning sign that you need to take seriously.
