Post-Extraction Wisdom Teeth Pain: When to See an Emergency Dentist

Unless you need to have stitches removed, you don't generally need to see your dentist after you've had wisdom teeth taken out. Things should heal on their own.

Sometimes, however, you can get complications after wisdom teeth extractions. In some cases, you may be able to pop to your dentist quickly to have the wound sites checked. This isn't always possible, however.

If your dentist is closed for the weekend or you are away from home, then you may need to see an emergency dentist. When is this necessary?

Types of Wisdom Teeth Complications

Most wisdom teeth extractions don't cause any problems. Your dentist will tell you what to expect after the procedure. So, you may have some minor pain, swelling and discomfort.

However, if you do develop a problem, then things could get worse quite quickly. For example, the tooth site may start to hurt a lot a few days after your surgery. Your jaw can start to feel very stiff, and your cheek could start to swell up pretty alarmingly.

Generally, you know you have a problem if any of these symptoms suddenly appear after a period when things seemed to be healing nicely. Or, you should be concerned if normal post-extraction symptoms start to get worse rather than better.

When to See an Emergency Dentist

If you only have an overnight wait to see your dentist, then you may be able to ride things out. However, if you have to wait a couple of days, it may be better to see an emergency dentist.

Some problems need immediate attention. For example, if a stitch comes out too quickly, then your gum may start bleeding. You may not be able to stop this bleeding. In this case, you need the stitch put back in as soon as possible.

If the extraction site gets infected, then you may develop a condition called dry socket. You'll know if you have this problem because the pain is unbearable. Painkillers won't help much; you need to have the socket cleaned out and treated as soon as you can.

If you have either of these problems or if you have swelling or stiffness that is getting considerably worse, then it is worth calling an emergency dentist immediately. You can explain what is happening. They can then tell you whether you should have an emergency appointment or if your problem can wait until your dentist's clinic opens again.
